2020 Olio Nuovo Harvest
Our farming year concludes with the olive harvest and this year is one of the best that we’ve seen in a long time. The trees are heavy with gorgeous fruit in the Veneto region of Northern Italy where we make jovial Reserve Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and this year’s oil has one of the best flavor profiles I have ever tasted. It’s been a tough year for them, with a decline of local sales to restaurants that have been closed during the pandemic.
If you’re new to our Olio Nuovo sale, let me explain why this sale is so important to me. For years, my family has procured a full year’s worth of freshly pressed oil directly at the press during harvest, when the press is bustling with farmers and the oil is at its peak of flavor and polyphenol content. We believe that olive oil is one of the true gifts of Mother Nature, and it is the key ingredient in almost every meal we eat. One day at the press many years ago, I overheard some farmers having a heavy conversation about not knowing what to do with their oil, since the locals were starting to buy oil at large supermarkets for convenience, instead of maintaining the traditions of their grandparents. I thought if I could tell their story to my customers they would gladly purchase this amazing oil. We’ve been having this presale ever since, and let me tell you that in a hard year like this, when Italy has just gone back into partial lockdown, the farmers feel good knowing that they are immediately shipping a nice quantity of fresh oil to us. That means they are getting paid for their harvest, and there is also a sense of pride that their traditional product is making its way to America, and that it is appreciated.
Since new oil has a fruitier flavor, it doesn’t make it’s way to stores because the goal at retail is to keep the flavor consistent throughout the year. To do this a portion of the previous year’s oil is always mixed with new oil, until the new oil’s flavors mellows over time. At jovial, this fresh pressed oil comes to you direct from the press.
